The Drake Family Library in Grinnell, Iowa is nearing completion. Last Saturday, the library staff gave a “preview” tour of the building. Here is a message from Lorna Caulkins, the director, to the MS&R staff:

Our “sneak preview” tour for donors on Saturday was a great success. Over 250 people came–far fewer than the 900 or so invitations we sent to everyone who has contributed to the funding, but still a great number considering that many donors do not live here and there were lots of other things going on that day.

The part I wish you could have shared is the expressions of awe and delight on every face than came through the door. Absolutely everyone was thrilled with the space, and it was a pleasure to answer their questions and give them the tour.

We are going to send a follow-up letter asking for more contributions, but it was a nice surprise to have a number of people volunteer that they will want to give more. That was just what we hoped for, and the building itself did the job of making people want to help beyond what they have already done.
